Megan arrived at Adam’s office shortly after four thirty. She knew his last appointment was at four, so she had plenty of time to catch him.

The receptionist recognized her and showed her back to Adam’s large office. The space was impressive, with a big desk and plenty of diplomas and awards on the wal s, along with a painting they’d bought together the last time they’d been in Santa Barbara.

She walked around the room, then paused by the window, not sure what she was supposed to be feeling.

Anger? Confusion? Hurt? There were al those emotions and others she couldn’t name. But there was also a sense of certainty. She’d made her decision and she knew it was right.

It hurt. Knowing her relationship was over kept her up at night as she alternated between tears and rage. For a while she’d wondered if the problem was her—had she forced Adam into acting this way? Then she’d come to her senses, mental y slapped herself hard and accepted that Adam had cheated because that’s the kind of guy he was.

With certainty came a kind of relief. It hurt, it was relief with claws, but it promised that in time she would heal. It promised that she would one day accept that Adam wasn’t the love of her life. He was just a jerk with an expensive education and unlimited earning potential.

“Megan!”

She turned and watched him hurry toward her. He was as handsome as she remembered, but that information no longer mattered.
